OCTOBER 23-25, 2024 – The annual Divisional Music Directors Conference was held at the Crestview Conference Center at the USA East Territorial Headquarters. Over three days, music leaders gathered for learning, sharing, and fellowship, aiming to strengthen leadership skills among some of The Salvation Army’s most influential ministers.
Conferences like this can sometimes foster a sense of comparison between divisions, especially considering the varied resources each division has. However, this year’s event focused on small group discussions, team-building activities, and leadership development, fostering a positive atmosphere. The emphasis was on creating tangible growth in each music director and positively impacting the musicians they lead daily.
Hosted by the Territorial Music Department under TMS Derek Lance, the conference welcomed seasoned guests who understand the unique challenges of music ministry. Peter Kim, Divisional Music Director of the North and Central Illinois Division, led several sessions, sharing his journey from small business ownership to music ministry. His testimony, which included personal stories like the loss of his mother, was combined with detailed presentations on organization, scheduling, and growth strategies. Kim’s insights provided attendees with practical tools and inspiration to enhance their music programs.
Majors Philip and Jodi Lloyd from the Western Pennsylvania Division added another dimension, delivering devotions and practical leadership strategies for managing large-scale music programs. Their sessions were well received, and attendees appreciated the thoughtful encouragement (and a steady supply of sweets!). A special treat was the personal barista, adding a bit of fun to the afternoon sessions.
The event wasn’t all workshops and training; Thursday evening offered a chance to unwind at Top Golf in Edison, NJ, where attendees enjoyed a relaxed night of food, fellowship, and friendly competition—even for those less familiar with a golf club!
Worship moments, led by Territorial Contemporary Music Director Victor Morales, were among the conference’s highlights. In the closing session, participants wrote notes of encouragement to their peers, reinforcing the reminder that they are Kingdom builders through music ministry. With renewed hearts and a clear sense of mission, the music directors left prepared to continue The Salvation Army’s work through their gifts.
